Comments from the industry
Stephan Schaller, CEO, BMW Motorrad
“We are happy to have had the opportunity to, so to speak, open this year’s INTERMOT, because we were the first company to present our products to the media. Of course we consider it very important to have the right platform, as we are the only manufacturer in Germany that produces a significant product volume in the premium segment. That’s why for us INTERMOT in Cologne is the most important basis for presenting our products and our communication about them. We’re very thankful that INTERMOT exists.
Naturally, I’d be even happier if there weren’t two trade fairs that are scheduled so soon one after the other. That has got to be said. But it’s clear that INTERMOT has done a good job. If Eicma manages to take place every other year, then we would have a big trade fair every year — alternately in Italy and in Germany — and from our perspective that would certainly be even better.”
Marcel Driessen, Managing Director, Ducati Motor Deutschland GmbH
“INTERMOT is certainly very important for us in Germany — here in Cologne, where Ducati is at home. Of course we want to try to expand Ducati even further in Germany. We set new records last year, and that’s why it’s important for us to stage this premiere right outside our own front door.
At the world premieres of our Supersport and our Supersport S, which were presented by Claudio Dominicali, we also had people staying at our stand for a long time, even though it was getting late. There were crowds of visitors, and we feel good about that. Our product is being well received, the price is right, and we are looking at the future with confidence.”
Dr. Christian Arnezeder, Managing Director Harley-Davidson Germany GmbH
“For us at Harley-Davidson, INTERMOT is a very, very important leading trade fair, in the international and also the European context. You can also see that at the press conferences that are being held today.
We’ve seen very, very many new products, and that’s why it’s absolutely clear that this is THE leading trade fair in Germany and that it also reaches wide circles of consumers in Europe. We know that at first hand and from our own business community. A large number of our colleagues came from England to this event, and they enjoy being able to see absolutely all of the innovations in one place. So for us it’s a fantastic feeling to be here.”
Rudolf Harrer, Vice President, Honda Deutschland branch of Honda Motor Europe Ltd.
“For a global company like Honda, a leading international trade fair such as INTERMOT here in Cologne of course has extremely high priority. I think you can also see that very well in the fact that we are staging two world premieres here. That shows how important INTERMOT is for us here in Germany.
INTERMOT in Cologne is the biggest trade fair for motorcycles and scooters in Germany and the biggest “fun market” in Europe — in other words, the biggest market for large motorcycles with large displacements. That’s why it’s very, very important for us to participate in this event, show our colours, and present our new products and new technologies for the next season to the consumers and the media. In short, INTERMOT is our launch pad into the year 2017, and I hope it’s a very, very good one.”
Martin Driehaus, Team Leader Marketing, Kawasaki Motors Europe N.V. branch in Germany
“Kawasaki assigns very high priority to INTERMOT. You can already see that in the simple fact that we’ve presented so many new products here — four global premieres in all. Europe is the most important market for Kawasaki, and Germany is one of the biggest markets in Europe. That’s why Kawasaki assigns INTERMOT very, very high priority. We also believe that Germany, as a motorcycle market, deserves to have its own leading global trade fair, and that’s why we’re delighted to be here.”
Hubert Trunkenpolz, CSO, KTM Sportmotorcycle AG
“The German market is the most important European market for KTM, and INTERMOT is therefore a key trade fair for us too. I think you can see just how important it is by looking at the sheer size of our presentation here. This is an international trade fair, and that’s why we held our press conference in English. INTERMOT attracts participants from all over the world, and that’s why we are very, very happy to be here.”
Gerald Federl, Managing Director, MSA Motor Sport Accessoires GmbH
“This is naturally a very important event for us. In a two-year rhythm, we come here to meet our dealers, who always turn out in huge numbers. Here we also meet many end customers, who look at the products we present — not only our new products but also our existing ones, because we always show a very wide range of two-wheelers. This is a very important trade fair for KYMCO. You can see that very clearly in the fact that Kymco has decided to present the AK550 — the new generation of the Supertouring scooter — here in Germany in 2016.”
Ulrich Schäfer, Managing Director, D/A Polaris Germany GmbH
“As a new member of the IVM, we felt we had to really show our colours at this year’s event. We are represented here by our motorcycle brands Indian and Victory, our Polaris off-road vehicles and the Slingshot three-wheel motorcycles. We’re also exhibiting in various special areas and at our cooperation partners’ stands. That’s why INTERMOT is a key event for us. As in every INTERMOT year, for us it’s the most significant trade fair in Germany and in Europe. And as you can see from the presence of our colleagues from the USA, it may also be the most important one worldwide.”
This unusual vehicle with a unique hydraulic tilting system for the front and rear wheels has attracted a lot of attention, provided lots of topics for discussions with specialist dealers, and sparked lively interest from the end customers.
At Kymco, the main focus was on the brand’s ATV, quad and UTV innovations. As the market leader in the 250 and 300 cc class, we thrilled many dealers and end customers with them. The MXU 700i LOF EPS, the Maxxer 300 Supermoto and the UXV 450i celebrated their premieres here. We were also absolutely satisfied with the launch of the new 250 cc single-cylinder bikes from the GD series of Hyosung, which had already received a very enthusiastic welcome in the specialist media.
In addition, we presented our new lifestyle brand Strida here for the first time, including three of its latest extravagantly designed folding bicycles in jazzy colours. Strida has already become an urban cult brand in many countries, and the numerous inquiries we received at our stand show that there is lively interest in stylish innovations in Germany as well.
Another one of our premieres at INTERMOT was the presentation of our new own brand, Trenoli. So far, under this label we have presented eight electric bicycles that are equipped with selected high-quality components and cutting-edge technology from leading manufacturers such as Bosch, Panasonic and SR Suntour. Lots of scooter and motorcycle dealers also wanted to talk to us, because they would like to participate in the booming market for electric vehicles.
For our accessories brand, Speeds Performance Parts, the many personal talks we had with specialist dealers were very important, because we ended up receiving lots of wishes and suggestions in a concentrated form. In our future product policy, we can take these wishes and suggestions into account. At next year’s event we will once again surprise customers with attractive new accessory products in the categories of helmets, clothing and gloves.
We’re already looking forward to the new season, and we thank the IVM team and Koelnmesse for their outstanding organization of this event!”
Gerald Steinmann, Manager Marketing and PR, Motorcycle & ATV Suzuki International Europe
“I think the high priority we assign to this event is evidenced by what we’ve seen today — the five world premieres we presented here, for the GSX R 125, GSX S 750, GSX R 1000, DL 1000 and DL 650. It’s a very wide product range.
We regard INTERMOT Cologne as a leading trade fair. It is international and high-quality, with top-class journalists and excellent services provided by the trade fair organization itself. We were allowed to try out something new in the area of pyrotechnics, which involved a great deal of preparation — and the trade fair organizers showed tremendous flexibility and super partnership.
As far as we’re concerned, we’d like things to continue as they are. What really confirms our opinion is the fact that we always coordinate the list of products we plan to present with our company’s headquarters, and our headquarters focuses on Cologne.”
Natalie Kavafyan, General Manager Germany & Austria, Triumph Motorrad Deutschland GmbH
“INTERMOT is naturally very, very important for Triumph. Our stand at this year’s event is the biggest one we’ve ever had in our company’s history. If you’re wondering why, I can easily explain. For one thing, we now have a very large number of models, and we need a lot of space to set them up. In addition, Germany is a very strategic market for us and we see a tremendous amount of growth potential here.
INTERMOT is simply THE trade fair for our sector in Germany, and that’s why we have to be here and present our products on an appropriate scale. We’ve really enjoyed being here today. For me in particular, it’s a very special feeling, because I’m a native of Cologne.”
Jörg Breitenfeld, Country Manager Germany, YAMAHA Motor Deutschland GmbH
“INTERMOT is of course a tremendously important event for us. This is where new products — including world premieres — are presented, and they are extremely important for the European market.
INTERMOT is naturally super-important for us as a German importer, but at the same time we’ve succeeded in taking this event’s importance for the German market and expanding it to the European market as well.”
